Moving to Vienna – International Relocation

Moving to Vienna

Moving to Vienna, You will get to enjoy one of Europe’s most beautiful and culturally vibrant cities. Recently ranked by Mercer as one of the best worldwide destinations for those relocating abroad, Austria’s capital combines majestic architecture with an abundance of tranquil green space.

The city is home to the State Opera House, numerous art galleries, cafes on every corner, and bike paths winding their way through quaint streets and interesting neighbourhoods.

Vienna Opera House Culture

Even when the initial novelty of Vienna wears off and the reality of being away from home settles in, be assured that the transition for the expat is a piece of cake – sacher torte to be exact.
Vienna’s expats take care of themselves; partly because there are so many of them and partly because the Viennese are not known for their warm welcome. To put it lightly, the locals are a very “reserved” people.

Expats living in Vienna

Expats living in Vienna will always feel, to some degree, like foreigners – even if they master German. The Austrian culture is strong and insular.

This is why there are so many social groups set up by expats – there really is a group for every interest including mothers, Australian-Austrians, book lovers, hikers, museums goers, writers, and sports enthusiasts of every hue.

Transport in Vienna

The city is highly accessible. An extensive train, tram and bus system allows expats to traverse Vienna in minimal time.

Transportation is on schedule and inexpensive compared to many other cities.

Accommodation in Vienna

A negative is that house searching can be incredibly frustrating and initially expensive, as commission fees must be paid to agents.

You may find our home search services invaluable.
Expat accommodation in Vienna is mostly in the form of apartments found in flat-fronted, four-story buildings painted in an array of colours – pale pink, yellow, white and even mint green.

Typical Housing In Vienna Austria

All of these buildings generally look the same from the outside. Some have black wrought-iron balconies, and some have been modernized, but they all have the same enigmatic façade.

Yet once past the threshold don’t be surprised to discover delightful inner courtyards and gardens. And of course, the apartments themselves can be quite nice compared to the sometimes neglected common spaces, such as stairwells and entryways.
Vienna is a well-planned city and on several occasions has played host to urban planning conferences. It’s organized into 23 districts, the first being the city centre and the succeeding numbers lying farther and farther on the outskirts.

Language in Vienna

Contrary to what one might think, language is not an insurmountable barrier. The Viennese speak English very well and seem to enjoy practicing their skills at any opportunity. That said, there are many opportunities to learn German, and it will stand your career in good stead if you make the effort.

Alternatively you can use our relocation intercultural and language training services.

Schooling in Vienna

There are several private schools that are taught in English. They are highly regarded, but very expensive.

The benefit of attending one of these institutions is that you are investing in a community for both you and your child. Many expats live in the neighbourhood of these schools.

The transition to a new city is made easier due to resources and facilities available at the school. However, some would say that the cultural experience of being in a foreign city does not reach its potential due to the cocooned effect of being surrounded by expats. A helpful link would be to use our school search services.

Healthcare in Vienna

Expats moving to Austria can rest assured knowing that they will be moving to a country with one of the best healthcare systems in Europe.

The healthcare system in Austria provides free access to basic healthcare to all citizens and residents of Austria, as well as tourists and those staying in the country on a temporary basis.

Basic healthcare in Austria includes treatment in public hospitals, medication, basic dental care and some specialist consultations. For European expatriates there are also reciprocal healthcare agreements in place with other EU member states and those holding a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) can use it in Austria.
