Keeping the little one's happy

While moving to a new country can be very exciting, it can also be unsettling for some of the younger members of a family. To help ease the transition we have created our Children's Corner which is designed to provide useful tips and resources that can make children feel more comfortable about their move to a new location.

Deany bear is also here to support the younger members of your family. He would love to hear from your family about your moving experience with Interdean. Children can email Deany bear at Deany.bear@interdean.com. Deany also likes to get pictures from the children we move and some of these are available for other children to view on our web site. All colour pictures and drawings should be mailed to:

1. Plan your new bedroom
Children should be encouraged to think about their bedroom in the new home. It is a good idea to have them draw a picture of their current room to help them design the look of the new bedroom. Children love colours, so try to ensure that their design includes the colours they would like to see in their new environment.
2. Prepare a survival box
Preparing a survival box for your children can be a fun way to get them involved in the move. Think about some items that they are attached to and would be useful during the journey to the new home. The survival kit can be a bag, backpack or small container that they can carry with them. Items that might go in such a kit could be a favourite teddy bear or toy, some currency and stamps from the new country, games, magazines or books. If you would like you can download a colouring book form this site by clicking on the link Interdean colouring book.
3. Keep in touch with best friends
Make sure you have a list of your child's best friends with all of their contact details including email addresses. If you have photos of your children's best friends in your survival kit, write the friends email address on the back of the photo, it can be fun to have your child describe to their old friends their life in the new country.
4. Find out about the new country you're moving to
Visit a library or search the web so you can tell your children as much as possible about the country you are moving to. We have some links on this site for information on different countries. You could also learn what the local customs are or what the weather will be like. Try to find out what sports or activities are available and that will be of interest to your child.
5. Get your children involved with the packing
At Interdean we will be pleased to deliver some packing boxes to your home ahead of moving day. Have your children decorate a special box for themselves and encourage them to pack some of their special soft toys in preparation for the arrival of the moving crew.
